Online Course: History of the Qur’an: Variation and Canonisation
I started my academic career in the field of Qur’anic studies and some of my first publications were on the history of the the Qur’anic recitations (qira’at). I also taught in SOAS, Ebrahim College and Cambridge Muslim College on this topic. It occurred to me that delivering an online course on key topics may be of interest to many students. Published: Two Philosophy Articles
I have published “Unity in Divine Complexity: A Paracomplete Constructivist Model” in TheoLogica and “What is First? Islamic First Philosophy and Public Warrant” in Philosophy East and West (Early Release version). These are two technical pieces in major philosophy journals, exploring the question of divine unity in light of contemporary logic and a methodological question about essence in the Islamic philosophical tradition. It is too early to see how this work is received, but I think its importance for my wider project is to show that my philosophical work is a separate, complementary strand to my theological output.
In Progress: Divine Wisdom, Human Condition: A Maturidi Theological Anthropology
I am still working on this sequel to my Transcendent God, Rational World: A Maturidi Theology (2021). Progress is good: I have completed chapters on Belief and Sin, Prophethood and Messengerhood, and am getting close to finishing on Political Theology. The book has taken overall shape and I am really excited about it. One of the features of this book is that it is even more grounded in the thought of Abu Mansur al-Maturidi than the previous one, and, given the content, makes much greater use of his magisterial tafsir, Ta’wilat al-qur’an. Becoming deeply engaged with the Ta’wilat has been a great joy and has further enhanced my appreciation for the great man of Samarqand. I am looking forward to sharing the fruits of this work.
